We were having a great phone conference about the company’s server and storage environment in which we reviewed what they had, what they wanted, and where they hoped to be in the next few years. They had a thorough understanding of their brand preferences, features, capabilities etc., but when I asked that question, there was a long uncomfortable pause before they responded; “well I hope so, I mean that’s why we’re paying (unnamed company) for our disaster recovery…isn’t it?”.
Yes, that is why you pay a company for disaster recovery. So that in the worst-case scenario you don’t lose any critical data which would adversely affect the company or its operations. What I often find however, is that a company put together a DR (disaster recovery) solution that they’re not completely confident in. That’s like buying medical insurance for your family hoping no one ever uses it. Not a great scenario if something goes wrong is it?
When it comes to DR, you don’t always want to go with the least cost solution. The least cost solution is rarely the one that saves your company when something bad happens, in turn saving your job. A least cost solution makes people feel better without protecting the company.
A key feature to be on the lookout for when researching solutions is whether or not the solution tests backups for continuity and recovery ability. All the backups, 100%. If you don’t have 100% of your backups tested and backed by your solution or service, you can’t be 100% confident that you’re covered in case of disaster.
Modern DR solutions are also becoming more complex. With the mass adoption of cloud, increased security and security attacks, and multiple levels of back up across multiple branded options, there are a lot of ways to go. One of the great options I’ve been working with is the Veeam availability suite, more information and free 30-day trial here.
If you have specific questions about DR, I’m certified for storage and DR across many different brands to include: HP, Dell, Unitrends, Barracuda, RedHat, and Intel. I can help with your research, discovery, comparisons, trials, and quotes, you just have to ask!
