It’s May, the gateway to summer, and here come even MORE excuses than ever before!
I used to think the winter holidays were the slowest time of the year. Then I left the military and joined corporate America where excuses NOT to work seem to be in vast abundance. One of my favorite excuses (which is already rearing its head) is, “the dog days of summer”.
While working to improve myself several years ago, I started paying attention to excuses that were thrown around in order to catch myself, and work on cutting them out of my own life.
I started paying attention to the excuses that I said, and that others said to me. I found myself hearing excuses every single day, almost constantly, people say them without even thinking about it.
My current frustration: “the dog days of summer”. I’ve heard people in many industries talk about how the dog days hit, time to work less and relax because people won’t be doing as much.
“The dog days hit, we won’t be able to get as much done.“
“Yeah it’s the dog days, no one’s in the office.“
I thought to myself, here’s an excuse thrown around apparently every summer, used universally! People talk about it’s summer so things won’t be happening. Really…
Did the market slow down? No.
Have the average hours worked gone down? Outside of some vacations, no.
Are people buying less? No, many are buying more.
So why are the dog days an excuse for anything? Well the truth is it’s hot, and many people want a reason to do less. I fought against that excuse all of last summer and things went exceedingly well for me in my work.
Dr. Wayne Dyer says; “What would my life look like if I couldn’t use excuses?” What if every time one came up, using an excuse wasn’t an option? You couldn’t take that easy way out. Things would be quite a bit different in your life wouldn’t they?
To focus on ‘no negative excuses’ being in your life and, living the life you imagine may seem very difficult. It can be, but it’s WORTH it.
Essentially, excuses do nothing to further yourself in life. They are a disease and should be treated as such. While others claim the dog days are hitting, INCREASE your work load and watch the massive results roll in. Then tell me how it went for you.
I’ll leave with a Les Brown quote:
“Stop making excuses, nobody is listening…tell yourself today no excuse is acceptable for giving up. You deserve the best life has to offer.” ~Les Brown
